SEATED BRONZE GANESHA THAILAND 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 9,5 cm Wide 5,5, cm Depth 5 cm Weight: 740 grams A compact cast-bronze figure of Ganesha seated on a rectangular pedestal, the elephant-headed deity shown with a rounded body, multiple arms and an elaborate crown. His hands hold attributes associated with his divine powers, including the broken tusk and a bowl of sweets, while his mouse vehicle appears at the base. The dark patina is softened by wear to the projecting details. Ganesha is revered throughout South and Southeast Asia as the remover of obstacles and as a patron of wisdom, learning and auspicious beginnings. In Thailand, his Indian iconography was absorbed into local religious and artistic traditions, producing devotional images that remain recognisable while reflecting regional approaches to proportion and ornament. Here the small scale encourages close viewing. The clustered arms, crown and attributes form a dense silhouette around the calm central figure, giving the bronze an engaging combination of intimacy, symbolic richness and sculptural weight.
