SEATED BRONZE GANESHA INDIA 15TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 7,2 cm Wide 6 cm Depth 3,5 cm Weight: 247 grams A small, solidly proportioned bronze of Ganesha seated on a stepped rectangular throne. The elephant-headed god is represented with a prominent rounded belly, a long trunk sweeping across his chest and four arms arranged symmetrically around the body. His raised hands display attributes, while the lower hands are brought forward in gestures of offering or blessing. The surfaces are softly worn, with a warm brown patina and occasional lighter highlights that catch the contours of the head, shoulders and throne. Ganesha's distinctive form is associated with wisdom, auspicious beginnings and the removal of obstacles. His image is encountered across a remarkable range of Hindu devotional settings, from monumental temple sculpture to bronzes small enough to be handled or placed in a household shrine. Here the broad head and compact seated posture concentrate the deity's recognisable attributes into an intimate scale.
