A TOKCHA DEPICTING A GARUDA TIBET Dimensions: Height 5 cm Wide 5 cm Depth 1 cm Weight: 20 grams A small cast metal ornament takes the form of a highly stylised winged creature, its outspread wings marked with parallel ridges and its compact body framed by projecting, crest-like elements. The surface has an irregular greenish patina with lighter wear across the raised contours, accentuating the boldly simplified silhouette. Despite its modest size, the object has an emphatic, almost heraldic presence. The ornament depicts Garuda, the great bird of Hindu and Buddhist visual traditions. In Himalayan contexts, small metal ornaments of this broad type are often described as tokcha and may carry protective associations. Its interest rests in the energetic symmetry of the wings and the strong sculptural modelling.
