(R) YIXING TEA POT, SHAPE OF A ROOT, LATE QING DYNASTY, CHINA 1900 Dimensions: Height 11 cm Wide 10 cm Depth 18 cm Weight: 496 grams Naturalistically modelled as a gnarled tree root, this Yixing stoneware teapot integrates body, spout and handle into a single organic composition. Knotted textures, cut-branch forms and small applied shoots enliven the reddish-brown surface, while the cover continues the illusion with a branch-like knop. An impressed seal is present on the underside. Root-form vessels belong to the naturalistic strand of Yixing pottery, in which familiar botanical forms are transformed into functional objects for tea. Such designs combine tactile clay surfaces, references to the natural world and the intimate ritual of tea preparation.
