Auction ended

A SEATED BRONZE BUDDHA CAMBODIA 13TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 9,3 cm Wide 6,8 cm Depth 3,8 cm Weight: 154 grams A small Cambodian bronze Buddha seated cross-legged on a broad tiered pedestal. The figure has a compact torso, elongated arms and a high pointed headdress, with both hands resting together in the lap in meditation. A simple necklace-like band and restrained body ornaments distinguish the upper torso, while the lower robe merges almost completely into the crossed legs. The surface is heavily patinated in pale green and brown, with lighter mineral deposits collected across the face, shoulders and base. Khmer Buddhist sculpture often achieves monumentality through proportion rather than size. Even in this miniature, the broad shoulders, frontal symmetry and concentrated seated posture give the Buddha a strong sense of stillness. The hands gathered at the centre of the body act as a visual anchor, while the high head and broad base establish a compact vertical structure. The aged bronze surface is central to the object's present character. Green oxidation, brown metal and chalky deposits create a mottled skin that softens the modelling without obscuring the face or meditative pose. The result is an intimate Cambodian Buddhist image whose quiet presence depends as much on material age as on iconography.
