GOLD- AND SILVER-INLAID BRONZE OX, WARRING STATES TO HAN DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 3,4 cm Wide 2,5 cm Depth 6,7 cm This diminutive bronze represents a stocky, crouching animal with a pronounced muzzle, rounded ears or horns and legs tucked beneath its body. The compact silhouette is enlivened by incised scrolls and contrasting, pale metal inlay, especially around the face and flanks. Green corrosion and warm brown areas give the surface a richly varied appearance; the underside is hollow. Small animal bronzes were an important vehicle for inventive modelling and surface ornament in early China. During the late Zhou and Han periods, the bodies of real and fantastic creatures could carry intricate linear patterns and precious-metal inlay, turning modestly scaled objects into displays of technical virtuosity.
