A CHINESE BRONZE INCENSE BURNER TANG DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 14 cm Wide 9 cm Depth 9 cm Weight: 454 grams A Chinese Tang-dynasty bronze incense burner raised on three lively animal-form supports. The rounded body is surmounted by a domed pierced cover with a small ornamental finial, allowing fragrant incense smoke to rise through the openwork decoration. Rich green and brown patination covers the bronze, with darker deposits accentuating the expressive modelling of the legs and lid. Covered bronze censers played an important role in Chinese ceremonial, religious and domestic settings, combining practical use with carefully conceived ornamental form. This Tang-period tripod censer is particularly attractive for its sculptural supports, rounded proportions and richly aged surface.
