SEATED STONE GANESHA INDIA 1950'S Dimensions: Height 6 cm Wide 4 cm Depth 3 cm Weight: 85 grams A compact stone carving of Ganesha seated on a low rounded plinth. His elephant head, long descending trunk and tiered headdress dominate the composition, while the multiple arms and surrounding details are gathered into a dense, almost architectural outline. The pale stone is mottled with reddish-brown staining, and the deeper cuts retain darker traces that help distinguish the crowded forms. Ganesha is traditionally invoked as the remover of obstacles and the guardian of new beginnings. Even at this very small scale, the combination of elephant head, seated posture and attendant attributes communicates his identity without the need for a monumental setting. Such portable images can serve as objects of personal devotion as well as small works of sculpture. The figure is appealing for the lively compression of its iconography into a modest block of carved stone.
