A CHINESE PORCELAIN DAOGUANG BLUE AND WHITE LINGZHI DISH Dimensions: Height 3,8 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 16 cm Weight: 232 grams This shallow porcelain dish is painted in vivid underglaze blue with an animated arrangement of curling lingzhi forms, scrolling tendrils and cloud-like motifs. The design is organised in concentric zones, with a lively central medallion enclosed by a more open border near the rim. Alternating dense cobalt outlines and lighter washes give the decoration a fluid, almost calligraphic movement. Lingzhi, the auspicious fungus associated with longevity, became a familiar motif in Chinese decorative arts. Its distinctive lobed outline lends itself especially well to repeated, interlocking patterns on circular vessels. The pleasure of the piece lies in the rhythmic play of blue ornament across a clear white ground.
