LANDSCAPE WITH FISHERMAN IN A MOUNTAIN GORGE , GAO QI PEI (1660-1734) Dimensions: 140 cm x 45 cm A narrow vertical landscape in ink, composed around steep rock faces, scattered pines and a winding stream descending through a mountain gorge. Broad, dark washes establish the looming cliffs, while brisk, angular lines describe the rocky ledges and exposed roots. A small boat with a seated figure appears near the lower left, its quiet presence setting the immense scale of the landscape. An inscription runs along the upper right edge. The solitary fisherman is a recurring figure in Chinese landscape painting, often expressing withdrawal from worldly concerns and a contemplative relationship with nature. Here the tiny human presence is absorbed into an imposing arrangement of rocks and trees, and the contrast between dense ink and untouched paper supplies a sense of mist and distance.
