STANDING DRAGON, LIAO DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 6 cm Wide 3,5 cm Depth 1,5 cm Weight: 100 grams A small, upright dragon-like creature with an open mouth, raised head and compact body supported on short legs. Curving ridges mark the neck and back, while pierced openings separate the limbs from the torso and lend the figure a surprisingly open silhouette. The dark, greenish-brown surface has lighter tones in the recessed areas and around the sharply modelled facial features. The dragon is among the most enduring creatures of Chinese visual culture, associated with dynamic natural forces and auspicious power. Here the form is deliberately condensed into a portable sculptural object, with the open jaws and curling body supplying its energy.
