CLAY OILLAMP PROBABLY ROMAN Dimensions: Height 7 cm Wide 6 cm Depth 10 cm Weight: 121 grams A small dark-fired clay oil lamp with a rounded reservoir and long tapering nozzle. The upper section is moulded in relief and articulated by shallow ridges, while areas of abrasion reveal the lighter clay beneath the dark surface. The compact profile is practical and easily portable, with the nozzle designed to hold the wick away from the fuel chamber. Ceramic oil lamps were among the most familiar lighting devices of the ancient Mediterranean. Their reservoirs held oil while a wick projected through the nozzle to produce a controlled flame.
