(R) A CELADON-GLAZED CACHEPOT, FLOWER BASIN, CHINA, EARLY MING DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 18 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 24 cm Weight: 3624 grams A substantial cylindrical flower basin raised on three short cabriole feet, the exterior moulded with a continuous band of scrolling floral and foliate ornament. A translucent grey-green celadon glaze covers the vessel, pooling in the recesses of the relief and displaying an attractive network of crackle. The recessed underside remains unglazed, exposing the buff-coloured body. Celadon wares were admired for the quiet depth of their glaze and for the way carved or moulded decoration could emerge subtly beneath the surface. On a vessel of this scale, the combination of architectural form, floral relief and softly modulated glaze creates a restrained but imposing decorative effect.
