(R) A FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN DISH, CHINA, TONGZHI PERIOD (1862-1874) Dimensions: Height 6 cm Diameter 34 cm Weight: 1696 grams A broad, shallow porcelain dish with a gently rising wall and a narrow decorated rim, its interior covered with a lively arrangement of pink, green, turquoise and yellow enamels. Flowering branches and rounded medallion-like motifs fill the centre and surrounding fields, while the rim's patterned border neatly contains the exuberant decoration. The generous diameter gives the painted design ample space to unfold. Famille rose decoration relies on the interplay of delicate pinks and opaque colours to create intricate floral and auspicious schemes. Here the circular format brings the different motifs into a single ornamental rhythm, balancing the central design against the more densely worked edge. The dish is visually engaging both as a vessel and as a decorative composition viewed from above. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission.
