TWO COPPER REPOUSSE PLAQUES DEPICTING APSARAS NEPAL 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: APPROX Height 36 cm Wide 45 cm Weight: 1733 grams A pair of finely worked copper repoussé plaques, each centred by a celestial female figure moving through stylised cloud forms. The apsaras are modelled in high relief with elaborate headdresses, jewellery and patterned garments, while the surrounding fields are enriched with finely chased details. Traces of red pigment survive in places, and the edges show old losses, wear and numerous attachment holes. Their thin hammered construction and mounting holes suggest an original role as architectural or ritual decoration rather than independent sculpture. The combination of floating figures, cloud scrolls and worn copper surface gives the pair a strong sense of movement and age.
