A CHINESE DRAGON MOTIF JADE CAVING Dimensions: Height 5 cm Wide 4 cm Depth 1 cm Weight: 61,6 grams A small pale jade carving with a rounded rectangular outline, its front worked in shallow relief with a coiling, dragon-like creature. Curving forms overlap within the compact field, while the polished reverse reveals mottled inclusions and a softly translucent surface. The rounded corners and restrained depth of carving give the piece the tactile quality of a personal ornament. Dragon imagery has long carried associations of vitality and auspicious power in Chinese decorative art. In miniature carvings such as this, the design is compressed into a flowing pattern that can be appreciated as much through touch as through sight.
