STANDING BRONZE PARVATI INDIA 14TH TO 15TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 36,5 cm Wide 12 cm Depth 12 cm Weight: 4787 grams A finely cast standing bronze of Parvati, modelled with a tall tiered headdress, elaborate jewellery and a close-fitting lower garment articulated by incised bands and folds. The goddess stands erect on a lotus above a high rectangular pedestal, her right hand raised in a reassuring gesture while the left arm descends gracefully beside the body. The composed face and softly modelled torso contrast with the precise ornamental detail of crown, necklaces and girdle. As the consort of Shiva, Parvati embodies divine femininity, fertility and benevolent power. South Indian bronzes of the medieval period were created as fully three-dimensional sacred presences, their balanced poses and polished contours designed to remain visually compelling both in temple settings and in ritual procession. A circular attachment behind the headdress indicates the former presence or mounting of an aureole. The surface has a rich dark brown patina with areas of green encrustation.
