(R) BRONZE FOREST DEITY, WITH GOLD AND COPPER INLAYS, JAPAN, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 44 cm Wide 27 cm Depth 18 cm Weight: 10.283 grams A large Japanese bronze figure of a standing male deity advancing across a rocky base, the body animated by sweeping drapery and a pronounced forward movement. The robes are enlivened with gold and copper inlay forming floral and scrolling motifs, creating flashes of contrasting colour across the darker bronze surface. Long hair frames the expressive face beneath a floral headdress, while a leafy branch held in one hand reinforces the figure's association with the natural world. The sculpture belongs to a nineteenth-century Japanese taste for technically ambitious bronzes in which casting, chasing and mixed-metal decoration were combined to dramatic effect. Here the inlays are not merely ornamental additions: they articulate folds, borders and surface patterns, allowing the costume to remain visually active even across the figure's considerable scale. The integral pierced plinth and hollow underside are consistent with traditional bronze casting practice. The warm patina, contrasting metal inlays and energetic pose give the work a commanding presence, while the nature-associated attributes provide the figure with a distinctly poetic character.
