PADAMPA SANGYE LAMA CLAY FIGURE TIBET 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 6,7cm ; Wide 4,5 cm ; Depth 2,6 cm Weight: 50 grams This compact clay image depicts Padampa Sangye, the Indian tantric master closely associated with the transmission of the Zhije, or Pacification, teachings in Tibet. Seated cross-legged on a simple base, he raises his hands before the chest in an animated teaching gesture. The strongly characterized face, prominent nose and long locks give the small figure an immediate, ascetic presence, while surviving traces of pigment enliven the hair, features and garments. The solid modeling and devotional wear are characteristic of portable Tibetan votive images intended for intimate religious use. Padampa Sangye, who died in the early 12th century, became one of the most distinctive figures in Tibetan religious memory, celebrated as an itinerant yogin and teacher whose teachings also shaped the Chod tradition associated with Machik Labdron. Surface abrasion, encrustation and minor losses are consistent with age and handling.
