SEATED STONE GANESHA INDIA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 27 cm Wide 19 cm Depth 14 cm Weight: 7800 grams An eighteenth-century Indian stone sculpture of Ganesha seated frontally in a powerful, compact composition. The elephant-headed Hindu deity wears an elaborate crown and abundant ornaments, while several arms radiate around his rounded body holding sacred attributes. The curling trunk, broad ears and richly worked jewellery are carved in prominent relief, with darker deposits accentuating the recesses of the pale stone. Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles, patron of learning and bringer of auspicious beginnings, making his image a central subject in Indian devotional sculpture. The substantial weight, deeply carved details and strong triangular silhouette give this seated stone Ganesha a monumental presence.
