(R) A BRONZE FIGURE OF GAUTAMA BUDDHA, BURMA, MANDALAY, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 51 cm Wide 42 cm Depth 28 cm Weight: 22.5 Kilograms A substantial seated Buddha with broad shoulders and a calm, gently smiling face, the legs folded in meditation upon a wide, stepped base. The right hand reaches toward the earth, while the left rests palm upward in the lap. Deeply modelled robe folds sweep across the torso and pool around the crossed legs. The tightly curled hair and prominent ushnisha retain traces of vivid red colouring, while a jewelled band accents the hairline. The earth-touching gesture evokes the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, when he called the earth to witness his resolve. In Burmese devotional sculpture, this serene pose is often combined with flowing robes and an approachable expression.
