VISHNU AND LAKSHMI INDIA 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 10,5 cm Wide 7 cm Depth 7 cm Weight: 486 grams A compact bronze group of Vishnu seated in lalitasana on a tiered pedestal with Lakshmi beside him on his left. Vishnu wears a tall cylindrical crown and jewellery, his principal right hand raised in a gesture of reassurance; some of the remaining attributes are no longer preserved. Lakshmi is shown close against the central figure, also crowned and holding an attribute. Images of Vishnu with Lakshmi present the Preserver together with the goddess of prosperity and good fortune, joining complementary ideas of cosmic stability and abundance. In small bronzes intended for devotional use, the physical closeness of the pair creates an intimate image while the tiered base maintains the formal hierarchy of a sacred icon. The casting is more detailed at the front than the reverse, consistent with an object intended to be approached primarily from the devotional viewpoint. A rich dark-brown patina and areas of handling wear emphasise the long material history of the bronze.
