A LARGE BRONZE BUDDHA AMOGHASIDDI TIBET 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 33 cm Wide 25 cm Depth 13 cm Weight: 3.880 grams A substantial seated Buddhist figure in dark patinated metal, its richly ornamented body rising above a broad stepped lotus throne. The figure wears a tall, elaborate crown and prominent jewellery, with the upper body held erect and the legs folded beneath. Contrasting coppery and greenish areas interrupt the dark surface, drawing attention to the modelling of the torso, the crown and the repeated petals of the base. Amoghasiddhi is one of the Five Tathagatas of Vajrayana Buddhism. In Tibetan sacred art such crowned images bring together the meditative poise of a Buddha with the sumptuous adornment associated with transcendent wisdom. The sculpture nevertheless has a compelling frontal symmetry and a strong architectural relationship between the seated figure and its tiered support.
