CHEN ZIFEN (1898–1976) Dimensions: 96 cm x 44 cm An ink-and-colour hanging scroll showing a dark bird perched on a slender branch above rocks and flowering plants. The bird's compact silhouette is set against the delicate tracery of twigs, while light washes of green and warmer accents enliven the vegetation below. An inscription and seals occupy the left side of the painted field, balancing the asymmetrical composition without interrupting its spacious atmosphere. Bird-and-flower painting draws much of its appeal from the tension between careful observation and expressive brushwork. Here the bird forms the visual centre, but the surrounding branches and empty paper give the scene a quiet sense of season and place.
