LANDSCAPE , WANG HUI (1632-1717) Dimensions: 106 cm x 48 cm An expansive mountain landscape unfolds within the narrow format of a hanging scroll. A cluster of buildings occupies the lower left, connected to the surrounding terrain by winding paths and a small bridge. Above, wooded slopes and sharply rising peaks emerge through banks of mist; a waterfall descends beside steep rock faces, while the finely drawn trees give the composition a delicate, almost lace-like texture. An inscription and red seals appear in the upper left of the painted field. The composition belongs to the Chinese tradition of scholarly landscape painting, in which a mountain retreat offers an imaginative space for contemplation. The movement from inhabited foreground to distant peaks creates a journey through the image rather than a single fixed viewpoint. Dry, precise brushwork alternates with softer washes to distinguish stone, foliage and atmospheric distance.
