A STANDING KRISHNA BRONZE INDIA 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 15 cm Wide 4 cm Depth 2 cm Weight: 212 grams A standing Indian bronze figure of Krishna playing the flute, dating to the sixteenth century. The deity assumes the characteristic graceful tribhanga stance, with the legs crossed and both hands raised towards the face in the gesture of holding a flute. The slender silhouette is animated by a high coiffure or headdress, subtly modelled ornaments and a narrow waist. The warm golden-brown surface displays areas of darker patination that accentuate the softly worn details. Krishna as the divine flute-player, Venugopala, is among the most beloved subjects in Hindu devotional art, celebrating celestial music and divine love. The simplicity of this compact bronze gives the image an appealing intimacy and elegance.
