(R) A BRONZE SEDAN CHAIR HANDLE, KHMER EMPIRE, ANGKOR WAT PERIOD, 12TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 17 cm Wide 14 cm Depth 3 cm Weight: 409 grams A twelfth-century Khmer bronze sedan-chair or palanquin handle from the Angkor Wat period, cast as a strong circular carrying ring surmounted by symmetrical scrolling foliate terminals. The open centre is framed by rounded, substantial metalwork, while the richly modelled upper ornament recalls the curling vegetal forms found in Angkorian architectural decoration. Layers of green and brown patination, together with mineral accretions, lend the bronze a striking archaeological appearance. Such bronze fittings formed part of the elaborate equipment associated with ceremonial transport and elite Khmer court culture. Its clear silhouette and powerful scrollwork make this Angkor Wat-period fitting an impressive example of functional Cambodian bronze craftsmanship. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country. Proper export documentation is required to waive the VAT
