STANDING BRONZE PARVATI INDIA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 69 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 16 cm Weight: 10.624 grams This tall standing bronze figure of Parvati wears a high tapering crown and elaborate jewellery across the neck, arms and torso. One hand is raised beside the shoulder, while the other descends gracefully along the hip. The lower garment is covered with closely worked ornamental patterns that contrast with the smoother modelling of the face and upper body. The figure stands on a small integral base. Images of Parvati bring together the qualities of divine authority, grace and auspicious femininity within Hindu devotional art. Here the sculptor emphasises the vertical movement from the finely ornamented feet and drapery to the serene face and commanding crown. The warm brown surface, with lighter highlights on projecting details, reinforces the rhythmic contrast between smooth flesh and richly textured costume.
