STANDING PADMAPANI WITH INLAYS TIBET 12TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 13,5 cm Wide 5,5 cm Depth 2 cm Weight: 319 grams A slender standing bronze of the lotus-bearing bodhisattva Padmapani, poised with one leg gently advanced upon a small oval plinth. The serene, narrow-eyed face is framed by a tall headdress and elongated ornaments, while a long scarf loops around the body and falls almost to the feet. One hand rests at the hip; beside the raised opposite arm is a lotus stem with a prominent bud. Small pale inlays punctuate the forehead, headdress, jewellery and patterned garment, bringing a delicate rhythm to the warm brown surface. Padmapani is a form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva who embodies compassion in Mahayana Buddhism. The lotus is especially apt to this identity: rising from muddy water without being stained, it evokes the possibility of awakening amid the conditions of ordinary life. The sculpture's restrained movement and luminous accents lend intimacy to a sacred image intended to make that ideal visible.
