(R) PAIR OF BRONZE PALAST VASES JAPAN MEIJI 1890 - 1900 Dimensions: Height 47 cm Wide 31 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 17.6 Kilo grams both A matched pair of substantial Japanese bronze vases, each rising from a stepped foot into an openwork body and an elaborate domed upper section. Curling dragon-like forms, foliage and small projecting ornaments create a densely textured surface, while the prominent handles extend beyond the main silhouette. Dark brown patination is relieved by lighter highlights across the raised relief and pierced decoration. Rather than relying on a single smooth vessel surface, the makers have built up successive registers of sculptural detail, inviting the eye to move between the central body, applied figures and elaborate finials. Displayed together, the two vases achieve a particularly imposing and symmetrical presence. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country. Proper export documentation is required to waive the VAT
