CLOISONNE ENAMEL PRAYER WHEEL CHINA 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 22 cm Wide 8 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 694 grams A richly ornamented Chinese cloisonné enamel prayer wheel of the nineteenth century, formed as a cylindrical revolving chamber with a slender metal spindle. Against a brilliant turquoise-blue ground, gilt cloisons define coloured lotus petals, foliate scrolls and large sacred script characters arranged in carefully balanced horizontal registers. The jewel-like enamels contrast elegantly with the warm metal fittings. Prayer wheels are fundamental devotional objects in Tibetan Buddhist practice, the act of turning the cylinder symbolising the repeated recitation of sacred mantras. Here the spiritual purpose is combined with the technical refinement of Chinese cloisonné, producing an unusually colourful and highly decorative example of Himalayan Buddhist ritual art.
