SEATED BRONZE VARAHI NEPAL 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 16 cm Wide 14 cm Depth 9 cm without base Weight: 2141 grams with base An eighteenth-century Nepalese bronze figure of Varahi, the boar-headed goddess, seated in a lively asymmetrical posture upon a fitted display base. Her animal-headed aspect is combined with the elegant jewellery, crown and flowing ornaments of Himalayan sacred sculpture. Multiple arms project around the compact torso, their gestures and attributes lending movement to the composition. The bronze displays warm brown tones, green surface accretions and lighter areas of wear that accentuate the modelling. Varahi occupies an important place in Hindu and Vajrayana iconography as a powerful female deity. The intricate casting and concentrated sculptural energy make this Nepalese bronze a compelling devotional image.
