11 - HEAD OF A JAIN BRONZE INDIA 19TH CENTURY

Auction ended

HEAD OF A JAIN BRONZE INDIA 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 8,6 cm Wide 7 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 203 grams A finely cast bronze head of a Jain Jina, modelled with a broad forehead, elongated almond-shaped eyes and a composed, inward-looking expression. The smooth planes of the face contrast with the more elaborate treatment around the ears and lower edge, while the warm brown patina and traces of wear lend the small fragment a distinctly devotional character. Images of the Jinas, or Tirthankaras, embody the Jain ideal of complete spiritual liberation. Their deliberately calm, symmetrical features are not intended as individual portraiture but as visual expressions of detachment and perfected inner balance. Bronze devotional images were produced for Jain temples and private shrines across several regions of India. Although surviving here as a head rather than a complete figure, the sculpture retains the essential contemplative quality of Jain sacred imagery. Its compact scale, restrained modelling and serene expression make it an intimate object whose spiritual presence is conveyed through remarkable economy of form.
