A FIGURE SCROLL ATTRIBUTED TO JIN TINGBIAO (?–1767), CHINA, QING DYNASTY Dimensions: 400 cm x 32 cm A long figure scroll, photographed with several mounted sections, combines fine ink drawing with substantial passages of calligraphy. The pictorial section shows a sequence of elegantly robed figures, their sleeves and flowing scarves described by continuous, lightly varied lines. The figures appear against a largely unpainted ground, allowing changes in posture and the rhythmic fall of fabric to carry the narrative. A boldly brushed inscription above and a further calligraphic passage below frame the delicate central drawing. Chinese figure painting has long relied on the expressive possibilities of the line: a change in pressure or direction can suggest movement, weight and personality without extensive shading. In this work, the contrast between the restrained figure outlines and the more forceful calligraphic sections is particularly striking. The mounting invites the viewer to consider the relationship between painted image, written response and the successive acts of viewing and appreciation. The visible work is best appreciated for its animated draftsmanship, measured use of empty space and layered presentation.
