QU Qianmei (born in 1956) "2012 L-27" Mixed media on wood panel Signed and titled on the back 180 x 130 cm (Minor losses) Description: Born in 1956 in Ruian, near Wenzhou, in Zhejiang—a region with a long tradition of lacquerwork—Qu Qianmei was introduced to lacquer and gold work as a child before moving to France in 1985. She currently divides her time between Paris and Shanghai. Her painting combines the legacy of postwar lyrical abstraction—as exemplified by Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun—with Eastern aesthetics and the blue-green landscapes of the Song Dynasty. Influenced by the materiality of Antoni Tàpies, she works with lacquer, wood powder, mineral pigments, shellac, kaolin, and pu-erh tea in works that straddle the line between painting and relief. Invited by UNESCO in 2012 for the exhibition “Sky, Earth, and Time,” her work is represented in the collections of UNESCO and Rouen Cathedral.
