Frederick Arthur JESSUP (1920–2007) Bouquet on an Entablature Oil on canvas Signed lower left 115 x 72 cm (visible area) Framed Description: Frederick Arthur Jessup, known as Fred Jessup (1920–2007), was an Australian painter born in Talbot, Victoria. Trained at East Sydney Technical College, he became friends in the early 1940s with Margaret Olley, with whom he remained friends throughout his life. Like her, he moved to Europe in the late 1940s. The two lived together in Paris and in the Midi region. While Olley returned to Australia, Jessup settled in Espondeilhan, in the Hérault region, in the mid-1950s, where he pursued his career until his death. He belonged to a generation of Australian artists marked by expatriation, alongside Jeffrey Smart, Donald Friend, and Russell Drysdale. He devoted most of his later years to still life, with a pronounced preference for bouquets and arrangements rich in motifs, of which this *Bouquet on an Entablature* is a fine example.
