Encouraged by his childhood friend, the painter Selim Turan, he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and turned to abstraction, drawing inspiration from the materiality of Nicolas de Staël and the color theories of Kasimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and Paul Klee. He exhibited at the Salon des Réalités nouvelles and the Salon de Mai, and was represented by Iris Clert in 1957; he was subsequently represented by the Lucien Durand Gallery, where he met Robert and Lisa Sainsbury, his most devoted collectors, and later by the Daniel Gervis Gallery in 1969. He belonged to this circle of Turkish painters from the New School of Paris, which, in the postwar years, included Abidin Dino, Avni Arbaş, Fikret Mualla, Nejad Devrim, Fahrelnissa Zeid, and Albert Bitran, his longtime friend; he was also associated with Jean-Michel Atlan and Serge Poliakoff. Upon his return to Paris in 1971, he began to focus primarily on works on paper. He died in Paris in 1981. His works are held at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, the Mathaf in Doha, and Istanbul Modern.
