DEBRÉ, Olivier, 1920–1999 Seated Woman charcoal on paper (traces of smudging, MBM Ingres d’Arches watermark) signed lower right 65.5 x 50 cm. Expert: Cabinet MAKET The resale royalty is the responsibility of the buyer. Description: The brother of Prime Minister Michel Debré, Olivier Debré abandoned architecture for painting in the early 1940s, after studying in Le Corbusier’s studio. His visits to Pablo Picasso during this period influenced his early figurative works, before he developed, in 1950, the symbolic figures that established him as one of the major figures of postwar abstraction, alongside Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, and Jean-Michel Atlan. This charcoal drawing on Arches Ingres paper is part of the graphic work that Debré pursued alongside his painting, in which the human figure—even when reduced to a symbol—remains a constant reference. The drawing has been the subject of dedicated exhibitions, such as “Debré: Drawings 1945–1960” in Saint-Denis in 1990.
