DEBRÉ Olivier, 1920–1999 Seated Woman charcoal on paper (traces of smudging) Signed lower right 65 x 50 cm (view). Appraiser: MAKET Resale royalty is payable by the buyer. Description: The grandson of painter Édouard Debat-Ponsan, Olivier Debré trained as an architect and worked in Le Corbusier’s studio before turning to painting in the early 1940s. His visits to Pablo Picasso then inspired his early figures, constructed through line and outline. The human figure remained the starting point for his famous “sign-figures,” which first appeared in 1950, where only the verticality of the composition still suggests a standing silhouette. This charcoal drawing attests to this attachment to the body and the line in an artist typically associated with lyrical abstraction, alongside Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, and Jean-Michel Atlan, whom he met during his first solo exhibition at the Bing Gallery in 1949.
