Raymond PEYNET (1908–1999) Set of three preparatory drawings on the theme of fairies Mixed media on paper Two of them are signed in the lower right corner, and the third is signed in the lower left corner 38 x 28 cm (Signs of wear, small tears at the margins, stains) Description: Creator of the famous *Amoureux* (Lovers) that appeared in 1942 in Valence, Raymond Peynet (1908–1999) was one of the most popular newspaper cartoonists of his time, published in *Ric et Rac*, *Le Rire*, *Elle*, and *Marie-France*, and the creator of nearly two hundred posters. His delicate style, in stark contrast to the earthy figures of Albert Dubout, inspired Georges Brassens and left a lasting impression on illustrators such as Alain Grée. Also a book illustrator, he was equally adept at the fantastical: the preparatory drawings on the theme of fairies presented here extend the tender and lighthearted imagination that is the charm of his work. Museums dedicated to him can be found in Antibes, Brassac-les-Mines, and Japan.
