Pascal DAGNAN-BOUVERET (1852–1929) Still Life with Flowers Oil on canvas Signed upper right 34 x 41 cm (Hole on the right) Description: A student of Alexandre Cabanel and later of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret established himself in the 1880s as one of the leading figures of Naturalism. A member of Jules Bastien-Lepage’s circle, he shared a studio in Neuilly with his friend Gustave Courtois for many years. His scenes of rural life—from *The Accident with the Horses* to *At the Watering Hole*—and his series devoted to Breton pilgrimages, which won a grand prize in 1889, earned him international renown comparable to that of Léon Lhermitte or Jules Breton. A painter of religious subjects from the 1880s onward, he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1900. His works are housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hermitage Museum. This still life with flowers reveals a more intimate side of his art.
