Édouard CAZAUX (1889–1974) Circular planters Terracotta piece glazed copper-colored on the outside and bluish on the inside Signed on the base Diameter: 21 cm The buyer is responsible for the resale royalty. (Normal wear and tear, chipping) Description: Born into a family of potters from the Landes region, Édouard Cazaux (1889–1974) began his training in the craft at a very young age, first as a ceramic worker in Tarbes and then as a potter in Paris, while also taking drawing classes in Mont-de-Marsan, where he met the sculptor Charles Despiau. A scholarship recipient in 1912, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and in Sèvres and worked in several studios, notably with Edmond Lachenal; he also collaborated with his friend Jean Mayodon. Settling in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire, he built kilns there inspired by those in Sèvres, exhibited at the Salons beginning in 1921, and devoted himself fully to ceramics starting in 1929. His pieces were shown at the Rouard Gallery. One of the most important ceramic artists and sculptors of French Art Deco—alongside Émile Decoeur, Émile Lenoble, and René Buthaud—he drew inspiration from Greek sculpture as well as Cubism, the Far East, and African arts. His glazes, achieved primarily through the inclusion of copper and oxidation, produce those characteristic metallic sheens. He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1937; his works are on display at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Musée de Saint-Maur.
