Pair of Louis XV-style mirrors made of wood and gilded stucco with shell and rocaille pediments. Approximately 78 x 40 cm (As is, with damage and missing pieces) Description: The Louis XV-style mirror, with a pediment openworked with shells, foliage, and rocaille motifs, draws its design vocabulary from the collections of the great 18th-century ornamentalists. The engraved designs of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, the woodwork of Nicolas Pineau, and the compositions of Gilles-Marie Oppenordt established this asymmetrical and dynamic stylistic vocabulary, which was widely adopted throughout the 19th century by cabinetmakers and gilders. In Provence, this style found a particular resonance: the ornamental sculptor Bernard Toro, active in Arles, Aix-en-Provence, and Toulon, published one of the earliest collections of rocaille motifs as early as 1716. The Provençal tradition of “miroirs à parecloses”—mirrors whose glass is bordered by slats framing sections of the mirror, and whose pediments are adorned with vases or baskets of flowers—often associated with so-called “Beaucaire” productions ,” thus continued well beyond the 18th century in regional workshops.
