After Jules MOIGNIEZ (1835–1894) Dog on the Lookout Bronze cast with brown patina Signed in relief on the base 11 x 14 x 6.5 cm (Scratches from use, wear on the patina) Description: Born in Senlis in 1835, Jules Moigniez trained under Paul Comoléra, a specialist in birds and himself a student of François Rude. His father, a metal gilder, acquired a foundry to produce his son’s works, which allowed for the widespread distribution of his bronzes. He exhibited some thirty works at the Salon between 1855 and 1892, following a notable debut at the 1855 World’s Fair. Alongside Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre-Jules Mêne, leading figures in 19th-century animal sculpture, he distinguished himself with his terraces teeming with foliage and undergrowth. Famous for his birds, he also sculpted racehorses, dogs, and hunting scenes. More than half of his works were sold in the United Kingdom during his lifetime. This dog on the prowl is a cast based on his original model.
