(Signs of wear) Description: Created in 1897, the “Marly” model is one of Christofle’s classics. It takes its name from the Château de Marly, the residence of Louis XIV, and its asymmetrical, plant-inspired design draws on the Rococo style. Founded in Paris in 1830 by Charles Christofle, the company acquired in 1842 the patents for electrolytic gilding and silver plating from the Englishman Elkington and the Frenchman Henri de Ruolz, placing it at the forefront of the rise of silver plated metal in France. A commission from Napoleon III in 1851 for a service of some 4,000 pieces cemented its reputation. Under Paul Christofle and Henri Bouilhet, and later in the 20th century, the company collaborated with designers such as Luc Lanel, Christian Fjerdingstad, Gio Ponti, and Lino Sabattini; in 1951, it acquired the Cardeilhac silverware workshop. This tableware set is part of the tradition of the great French silverware makers, alongside those of Ercuis, Puiforcat, Odiot, and Tétard Frères.
