427 - Affiche Ancienne Original vintage political protest and propaganda poster titled Oppose Apartheid: Stop the '81 Tour / Support Black Liberation Now, designed by New Zealand artist and activist David Robinson Kent (1946-2013) and screenprinted by the influential Wellington Media Collective (WMC), created during the controversial 1981 South African Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand, the poster features a stylised clenched black fist raised in protest against an off-white background, with an inset of four rugby players mid-match. The 1981 Springbok Tour was the most volatile peacetime event in modern New Zealand history, triggering 56 days of intense civil unrest that pushed the nation to the brink of a social civil war. The conflict centered on the arrival of South Africa’s national rugby team (the Springboks). Anti-apartheid groups demanded the tour be canceled to protest South Africa’s regime of racial segregation. Conversely, rugby traditionalists and the conservative National government, led by Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, insisted that "sport and politics should not mix". Fair condition, staining, creasing, tears, paper loss in top right corner. Country of issue: New Zealand, designer: David Kent, size (cm): 76x47, year of printing: 1981.
