Affiche Ancienne Original vintage London Transport travel advertising poster titled The London Museum, designed by the highly celebrated British graphic designer and master of the minimalist modernist aesthetic, Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) commissioned by the London Transport Board to promote visits to the historic London Museum collections then housed at Kensington Palace. The poster features a classic Victorian hansom cab rendered as a large black silhouette dominated by a single, bold oversized wheel outline featuring a distinct red hub disc at its centre, with a gentleman in a top hat and a "mutton chop" moustache, with the cabbie dressed in a brown cape coat and a bowler hat perched at the rear driver's platform holding the reins aloft. The text below details the museum's exhibits ranging from pre-history to everyday London scenes, its location at Kensington Palace, the State Apartments with William Kent decorations, and the Orangery built by Wren for Queen Anne, and visitor information including free admission hours. Printed by Leonard Ripley & Co. Ltd., London. Fair condition, creasing, tears, minor staining, large pinholes on top edge. Country of issue: UK, designer: Tom Eckersley, size (cm): 102x63, year of printing: 1963.
