Affiche Ancienne Original vintage transport advertising poster titled A Story Without Words, designed by the celebrated Italian-American sculptor and master silhouette artist Ugo Mochi (1889-1977) for the London General Omnibus Company Limited. The poster features an intricate hand-cut silhouette layout that chronicles the development and modernisation of public roadways as a sequential visual narrative across six graphic panels, documenting the gritty, laborious progress of road engineering: an early steam traction engine hauling a heavy timber carriage, a group of navvies manually excavating soil with picks and shovels, a traditional horse-drawn wagon carting construction material, an early motorised steam roller smoothing a new road surface alongside horse-drawn machinery, large industrial steam boilers heating road tar beneath a classic gas lamp, a team of surveyors and laborers applying the final pavings to a modern road. The top-left corner incorporates a facsimile of an official company check issued by the London General Omnibus Company Limited, dated 1st January 1923, paid to the London County Westminster & Parr's Bank for the sum of over £245,823.8, showing the company's significant financial contribution toward public road maintenance. The large lower panoramic panel captures a bustling London street scene with double-decker open-top B-type buses, motor cars, pedestrians, and cyclists navigating past bare winter trees under a towering central street lamp. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd., London, Dunstable & Watford. Fair condition, folds, creasing, tears, staining, paper losses. Country of issue: UK, designer: Ugo Mochi, size (cm): 101x63, year of printing: 1923.
