"Barry FLANAGAN," co-published by the Waddington Custot Gallery. Like-new condition, in blister packaging. This is the first monograph devoted to the work of Barry Flanagan (1941–2009), one of Britain’s most eminent sculptors. With over 200 color reproductions and a recently compiled chronology, this book traces Flanagan’s life and work, from his first exhibition in London at the Rowan Gallery in 1966 to his final sculptures created in Ibiza in 2009. A graduate of St. Martin’s School of Art, Flanagan had already established a reputation as a leading figure of the avant-garde, a writer of concrete poetry, and a pataphysician, adhering to Alfred Jarry’s “science of imaginary solutions.” He was quickly hailed by international critics for his intuitive and inventive approach to materials, which aligned him with new artistic practices and emerging movements such as Arte Povera, Land Art, and Process Art. Beginning in 1972, as he began to question the function of public sculpture, Flanagan started exploring more traditional materials and methods, working with stone and bronze—the materials for which he is best known today. Today, Flanagan’s distinctive bronze hares are on display in numerous public spaces. He was drawn to this animal for its anthropomorphic potential and rich cultural iconography, and his monumental hares have now become popular landmarks in cities and landscapes around the world.
