Sean SCULLY, "Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings" [Volume II, 1980–1989]—Published by Hatje Cantz in 2018. The book includes 268 illustrations. Published by Hatje Cantz. Like-new condition, in blister packaging. This catalog, the second volume in a planned five-volume series, traces the evolution of Sean Scully’s paintings in the 1980s. Beginning with the major works that marked a turning point at the start of the decade, it traces the development of Scully’s mature style as well as his growing success in the United States and internationally. Born in Ireland, Scully studied in England before moving to the United States in 1975. By the early 1980s, he had settled in New York and was creating works that would influence his art for years to come. In works ranging from small-scale pieces (Solomon) to large-scale works (Heart of Darkness), Scully developed a powerful style characterized by richly painted bands and forms, a masterful command of color, and canvases with a solid structure. At a time when abstract painting was held in low regard, Scully revitalized and reinvented the medium, infusing it with rich evocations of places, literature, other art forms, and emotions. By the end of the decade, he was universally regarded as one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century.
